# Algebraic Expressions

We have learnt about basic concepts of Algebra in Grade 6. We extended our knowledge of algebra by using algebra to solve simple algebraic equations in one variable. Now, we explore Algebra even further!

Now we discuss about algebraic expressions in much more detail. We learn terminology related to describing the properties of algebraic expressions. Then we learn about adding and subtracting algebraic expressions.

# Symmetry

We all appreciate beauty in our day to day lives – whether it be beautiful flowers, landscapes, trees and so on.You might have also observed the regular and uniform shapes of various objects encountered  in day to day lives – houses, cars, tables and many many other things. Mathematicians way of describing beauty and regularity in mathematics is using the idea of “symmetry”.

Symmetry is a very important concept in geometry with applications in several fields of mathematics and engineering (and indirectly in our daily lives also). In this chapter we discuss about the basic ideas on symmetry.

# Visualising Solid Shapes

Let us learn more about different shapes encountered in our daily lives! Here we learn about differences between plane figures and solid figures. We also discuss the concept of “dimension” as is used in geometry. We learn terminology used to describe properties of solid shapes – like edges, faces, vertices. We also learn a couple of methods to draw solid shapes on paper.

# Rational Numbers

You might wonder: “What is so rational about rational numbers”? Well, if you can see the hidden “ratio” in the word “rational”, it gives you an idea of what is meant by rational numbers.

We have studied about fractions and ratios and recollect that these are represented using a numerator and denominator. We also know that fraction means “part of a whole”. We also know that in natural numbers, whole numbers and integers, there are no numbers between two consecutive numbers. Rational numbers allow us to divide the space between two consecutive numbers in further parts.

We learn the idea of rational numbers, general form of representation for these numbers, and how to do addition, subtraction using rational numbers.
